Memories of Andrew
Andrew was "my" first dog. We always had a dog when I was growing up but Andrew was the first dog that was to be my responsibility. I knew the minute I brought him home at 5 months that I never wanted to be without him. He was not the friendliest dog so he pretty much had only me and my immediate family, although there was a lady in the next building over who he adored. She would stand in her kitchen and yell "Hi Andrew" and he would take off like a bullet to greet her. She was disabled and it took her a little longer to get out of the door and onto the patio but Andrew never got too close to her until she was settled in her chair. It was like he knew she needed the extra time. She moved several years ago, and subsequently passed away, but he still stared over at the patio, waiting to hear her call. I hope she met him at the Bridge so he has someone to love him until I get there. I don't like to think he's all alone. Andrew had osteoarthritis, which made it difficult for him to walk. He endured for a couple of years on various pain meds and joint therapy treatments. But 2 nights ago, he was obviously in terrible pain that I made the decision to end his suffering the next morning. I know he's pain-free now but I think there will always be that tiny part of my brain & heart that will wonder if I did the right thing. Would he have done better on different medications? I miss him so much already. He was 14 1/2 years old and I know I gave him the best life I possibly could. I hope he knew or could at least feel how much I loved him.
