Memories of Cher
|
Elegy to Cher Cher--You will always be my little girl. Like a lost lamb that you were- I loved you all the more. A brazen, fearless bull terrier in public, submissive to my endless affection with your cooing whimpers in private. Those triangular, insightful brown eyes would study me with loving protection. On Saturdays, you would reluctantly follow me to the shower and let me bathe you. Soon afterwards your brindle coat would feel and glisten like silk in all its beauty rare. "You are such a pretty lady now, no longer a tomboy." I would say to you. Cher- My love for you is limitless; you gave me not only a paternal purpose, but you filled an emotional space that only a partner could do. You are my cherished child. I can no longer wipe your mouth after your meals, give you endless kisses good night on that chiseled nose and cheek , or drive with you next to me on our errands around town and into New York with intermittent caresses. Curious Passersby would marvel at your splendor. I miss how you would hurl me at the end of your leash to venture distant miles with your weary , afflicted paws never complaining like a disciplined soldier ready to confront. Where are you walking now, my little girl? Does heaven have those emerald grass carpets you now place your reborn paws on? Cher-I am so remorseful that your heart waned. Forgive me my little darling for I could not bear your suffering. I would massage your chest as if my touch would heal your inevitable fate. But it couldn't. I left you broken-hearted, and yearn for the day we will meet in joy. Your Daddy Tony |
