Memories of Daisy
Daisy - what can I say? I adopted you in January 2007 just 2 weeks after Markie died because I just couldn't live without a dog. But the way I found you was pretty special. I had looked at a couple of dogs at the Blue Dog Shelter but they weren't the right ones. Then one night I had a very vivid dream that the shelter called and said my dog was there! I went there the very next day and they said they had a new young adult Beagle for adoption. They brought you out and you sat right down at my feet and looked up at me! It was love at first sight and within a few days, you came home. We had an adventurous first week - you were out in the yard while it was snowing and you had on a cute little white coat with brown paw prints on it. Then you came running across the yard with a rabbit in your mouth and I didn't know what to do! The poor rabbit died and I did take it away from you, but after that I made sure to turn the lights on and warn any animals that you were coming outside!
You had a bad habit of eating things you weren't supposed to - maybe triggered by anxiety if you were alone. You had to have surgery to take fabric out of your insides, and so many times we had to make you throw up the things you just swallowed. It was a lifelong struggle but you made it through.
You loved to be outside in the sun - all year long, as long as there was sun, you would find a spot to sunbathe, in the leaves or on your Kuranda bed, in the grass or on the ramp to the shed.
You were so patient with all the other dogs I added to our home - Hunter, Winston, Nellie, Peppy, Shylie, Raisin, and all the foster dogs and puppies that I helped the shelter with. We even had a cat with her kittens for a while! You put up with two litters of baby Chihuahuas that were born at our house and were very gentle with them.
We went on so many walks as a "pack". You always had to smell everything while the others wanted to keep walking. It's funny but after you were gone, Nellie decided she had to smell everything just like you did.
You lived a good long life - you were almost 16 years old when you went to the Rainbow Bridge. That last night was hard - you got pretty sick and I wanted to wait until our regular vet was open because I didn't want to take you to the ER knowing that you wouldn't be coming home. Fortunately, we got hold of Dr. Page and he helped you with the special medicine so you could go to sleep. I was right there with you talking to you and telling you what a wonderful girl you were and how lucky I was to have had you for so long. Now you and Hunter and Winston and Peppy and Nellie are all together again. By the way, I put a bowl of food in your Memorial Garden because you sure loved to eat! Raisin and Shylie are still here with me and taking care of me. This year I added a new dog to our pack - a little Beagle mix named Pumpkin! She has a sweet Beagle face but she will never take your place. I will always have you in my heart and will love you forever.
