Memories of Kuma
|
My precious Kuma puppy. Her official AKC registered name: Rein's Kawai Kuma. Kawai Kuma translates to Beautiful Bear in Japanese. She will always be my puppy, I raised her from 3 mos. old and no matter how old she was I always called her my puppy. She also had several other aliases (Kuma Cakes, Kumie La La, Kuma Bear, Pupper, Kuma Lottie, Kuma Lotts, Kumalottie Poopotty, Precious, Presh, Preshy Pooch, Kumalina Poopina, Poopalina, Puppaness, Puppana......). She was my very favorite bear dog. That's what I love about Akitas, they look like a teddy bear. Words cannot even say how much I love her and am missing her. The house is dreadfully quiet and empty without her. I miss her in all her usual spots. She brought so much joy to my life. I just feel like 12 yrs. is not enough, though I know I couldn't keep her forever. And I knew I would probably, at least, only have her for another year. I am already looking forward to the day when she meets me at the Rainbow Bridge and I get to see her again. Romping, playing and having fun like she used to when she was younger. Poor Kuma, over the past year she was feeble and had become reclusive. She was having problems due to arthritis and she didn't want to be social with us anymore. She would stay up stairs mostly in our bedroom or walk-in closet. Only coming down to go to the bathroom and eat. In the early morning hours of Oct 7, 2007 she was sick and we had to rush her to an emergency vet where we found out she had Bloat. This is a very emergent condition and they have to act fast to operate and correct it. We decided that her quality of life was already compromised and didn't want to put her through that. So we gave her her rest. It is so hard to make that decision in a short amount of time. I just wanted to do what was best for her. It is so hard without her. Dogs are very consoling when you are sad, but what happens when they are the one you are sad about because they're gone. And they are not there to do the consoling. She was the best dog, everyone who knew her loved her. She was a people dog, she loved attention. She was so personable. I would always tell her "Kuma you're so good and cute". And I would grab her cheeks and kiss her snoot. I miss wooing her belly (when she would roll over and show me her belly, I would rub it with both hands and say "woo the belly" or "woo the belly, woo the belly, ra ra ra"). She loved peanut butter, pizza crust, potato chips, popcorn, ice cream, lunch meat, soft pretzels...... What didn't she like, she was a dog, they love most foods. We would take her to Pennypack Park (in Phila. near my old house) and she loved to take long walks, explore the little foot trails thru the woods and chase deer. Kuma was typical Akita; she was obstinate at times (I would often lovingly call her a mule), she was vocal, a total leaner (she would just come up and lean on you), she enjoyed the colder weather and loved the snow. She really came alive in the winter, being frisky and playful. But was kind of mopey in the hotter months. I have so many great memories and stories about her. I could probably write a book. It definitely would not all fit here. I know she had a good life, she was very spoiled. She was my big baby. It seems like a lifetime ago that she was a puppy. I miss all the great times we had. I just can't believe she's not here anymore, I don't know what I will do without her. Her cat buddies; Tigger and Daisy are rather confused by her disappearance and are missing her too. I believe dogs are as close as you get to God's presence on earth. Their unconditional love, and understanding is just overwhelming. They are all the characteristics of God in a physical form. It's no wonder then that Dog is God spelled backwards. Febuary 15, 2010 September 17, 2010 |
