Memories of Lily

I was fortunate enough to adopt Lily 6 months ago who had been rescued. From the start she imprinted a bond that never ceased to amaze me. We were indeed meant for each other deep within our souls.

Her name was originally FiFi but it did not fit her. When I first got her, a voice came to me and said LILY. I have NO IDEA where it came from but I immediately knew I needed to change her name. Perhaps that was her name previous to being abandoned, I dont know. However, what I do know is she knew that name from the start and responded to it immediately.

From the beginning she was such a good girl and followed me everywhere. She was very underweight so in order to get her to eat I would need to sit in the same room with her but that was okay. She managed to gain a pound and her fur again became healthy and thick, her eyes sparkly.

It was hysterical, when she would get mad at our other dog Hannah, whether jealous of too much attention or whatever, she would come to my right side and literally turn her back to Hannah....I laughed and laughed, she had such cute characteristic traits!!

She was ohhh so smart, understanding everything I said. When she tried to hurry back into the house, I could even tell her she had to go poo poo and she would know what i meant, turn around and go.

She always slept with me and cuddled close in a little ball. She did this cute thing with turning on her back and putting her two feet together and dance them up and down.

She also would put a piece of food or little bone on the carpet and take her head and try to 'bury' the food or bone. My sisters dog Spikey does the same thing. She did this a few days before she died and it was so cute to watch her.

We were VERY attached to each other and she would get upset if I left the room without her. Once I took her to work and had to leave for a little to take a client to some supplies, and she got loose from Sheila who had been holding her for me and they said she ran from room to room speeding around looking for me. When I returned she jumped into my arms from Sheilas, it was so precious. Yes, we had this bond that was very very deep.

When I was working, she would always need to lay in my lap at my desk, or right beside me on her blanket pile.

She also needed to be the 'boss' over Hannah and she would bark if Hannah did not let her out the door first...it was sooooooooo funny.

She never played with toys but she would find the littlest scrap when I was doing my crafts and throw it up and play with it. She tolerated Hannah and they sometimes would chase each other around but she never really played with Hannah.

Lily just loved my husband. She would jump and climb up on his stomach and just kiss and kiss his neck over and over. She would sit next to him and back up until her hiney was touching him, it was so cute.

She would give me special hugs around my neck which I just loved.

She loved to sleep in late like her mom and if I had to get up really early for a meeting, she would not budge and hated when I had to wake her up, it was really hysterical but endearing.

She hated to get her nails clipped but was such a trouper with her many hospital trips and tests. She did very well with her surgery after I first got her and was a real trooper.

She loved wearing little head bows and would leave them in all day. She looked so cute.

Her first and last haircut, performed by me of course, was trying for her but she did well. She looked so cute with a shorter cut and the hair was finally out of her eyes so she could see better.

The vet thought she was around 5 1/2 when I got her and made her birthdate Christmas. We really did not know anything about her past but considering she had to lose 11 teeth due to them being rotten, being underweight, never spaded, having worms and a tumor, lets just say she had a hard life.

However, that all changed when she came into my life. She was loved so deeply and totally and we went everywhere together.

Lily was soooooooooo smart, it was really unbelievable to me how she could understand what i was saying. Im not sure if it normal for this breed but it was amazing.

And, she was so well trained to go outside.

She loved to go for walks with me at night and would scamper so fast sometimes I had a hard time keeping up with her. This is amazing knowing now what conditions her lungs were in.

Everyone who met Lily just loved her and she was very affectionate and friendly to everyone. However, she never took her eyes off of me. And I always reassured her I was not going anywhere without her coming also....nope, no other homes for her but mine!!

As you can see, she has left an imprint on my heart that will never go away. I have NEVER EVER felt this way about any of the other pets I have had in my life...and there have been alot. Our connection was an INSTANT one and very very deep. Call it spiritual, call it whatever you want...it was a magical experience I shall never forget. My husband also was very very attached to this little one.

Lily started coughing recently and I took her to my vet who, through an xray saw her lungs were filled with something. That vet wanted me to take her to a specialty hospital but they could not get me in for over a week....and the vet said its no big deal. HOWEVER it WAS. She was getting worse and so i got a second opinion and that vet said it WAS an emergency and called and got me into another specialty hospital that same day. There, after a day of testing, it was determined she had severe lung cancer, too far involved for anything to be done. They recommended she be put down that day but i needed more time. Since she was still eating and drinking and wagging her tail I felt I could wait a few days. I took her home. They gave me things to look for in her breathing etc.

I was able to take alot of pictures and a little video of her in the next two days we had left. On Christmas eve night she had a rough night and I knew her time was near. On Christmas Day it was time and we had to say our goodbyes. She was a fighter to the very end, needing two needles of sedative. She went very peacefully in my arms and we buried her in my favorite shirt, a blanket in a special casket the hospital gave us. She lays under an angel I have in my front yard, close to my office window. She was only six years old when she died.

Lily, our time together may have been only 6 months long, but our memories and bond will last forever. I look forward to the day we will be with each other again. In the meantime, I'm sure Grandpa is having lots of fun with you and taking good care of you.

I love you lily, so very very much. Thank you for coming into my life. We miss you dearly.
