Memories of Luna
|
LUNA 1992-2008 Luna was adopted by Leigh on December 29th, 1992 after being rescued from a Brooklyn, New York rooftop. She was approximately six months old. Leigh chose the name 'Luna' after the full moon and never regretted her choice - Luna was the "brightest light" in the lives of many. Being an odd-eyed (one blue and one yellow) white kitten, she was completely deaf but definitely not mute! Due to an eye condition, her blue eyed Mom, Leigh only wore one contact lens and chose a green one. When asked about her two colored eyes - she would say that she "takes after her cat". Luna became Leigh's special companion while living alone in an apartment on St. Mark's Place in New York City for six months before moving across the river to Brooklyn. She had two different personalities - a quiet cuddly kitten and also a playful daredevil who could run laps around the bathtub and "tightrope" walk on a water pipe high above a room in a Brooklyn loft. Leigh and her boyfriend, Jeff always brought her some shrimp back from their favorite Thai Restaurant. She resided full time in Brooklyn for eight years, vacationing at her "grandparents" home in Cape May (by the sea), New Jersey during the summers and holidays. She was a great travel companion and spent many hours on the New Jersey Garden State Parkway! She loved the smell of the ocean air. She chose Cape May as her retirement spot in 1999 and moved in with her grandparents, Dick and Pat where she enjoyed lovely naps on the porch, sitting in her wicker chair and watching the seagulls from the window and especially curling up on Grandmom's lap in the tv room watching General Hospital. She protected her home and when a neighbor's cat chose to visit the front porch - she ran the length of the house and right through the screen door and chased that cat away! - sauntering back home as if nothing happened. That cat never stepped on her porch again. Her favorite wintertime spot was laying on top of the 1920 heating system (radiator)- her special spa. Another favorite spot was right on top of the newly washed black shirts of her grandfather. He was always trying to get the white hairs off of his clothing. She was so happy that she was living in seafood heaven - getting many treats! She never heard a sound - but had the best sense of smell in the house. Whenever dinner was being prepared - Luna would soon be around the kitchen, waiting for shrimp, crabmeat, salmon - or anything else that smelled good....She loved Cape May and we discovered that her fur became so much whiter than when she was running around in that Brooklyn loft. She had a special window sill that she could sit in to watch the comings and goings of Washington Street. At Christmas time, her grandmother would set up a Dickens Village Scene on this spot. That didn't deter her when she was younger. She squeezed in between the houses and became part of the snowbank where she snoozed away - becoming a monster snow cat in the village! Most cats don't like peppermint but if you went near her after brushing your teeth or eating mint candies - beware - she would climb up on you to try to discover where that wonderful scent was coming from and even try to put her nose in your mouth! Her least favorite thing in the whole world was any room that had a ceiling fan operating....she would not go near that room. Or if she had to pass through the room, she would scoot around the very edges, looking up terrified. We always wondered if something happened on that Brooklyn rooftop where she was found or in a previous lifetime where she may have been frightened by helicopters???- or whether there were fans on top of that roof. Luna had many cat cousins. They were Uncle Geff's cats - Binky, Pursey, Lil Boy, Lil Bo, Lil Boots and Spirit; Aunt Suzanne,Uncle Rob, Katie and Emily's cats - Winnie and LuLu Bell. Her Mom, Leigh and Dad, Jeff adopted three new cousins when Luna went to live in Cape May - Xena, Jinx and more recently, Trixie. She will happily meet Binky, Lil Boy, Winnie and Lil Bo at the Rainbow Bridge. Luna loved having her human cousins, Katie and Emily visit her in Cape May, once she came out of hiding! And we know they loved visiting her too! She was also known as 'luna tuna', 'looney tunes', 'princess pinkfeet', 'boo boo', 'Pop Pop's snooze partner', 'bunny', 'buns' but mostly Grandmom called her "spoiled". We will always miss the sound of her extraordinarily loud purrs. Luna will be loved forever. The following two poems were written by Uncle Rich and Uncle Geff:
