Memories of Otis
|
Otis came into our lives at an advanced age. The first time I sat on the floor and he came up to me I knew that we would get along. When he moved into our house and met Hemi, the sensitive short hair Tabby, they became instant friends. Hemi still looks for you under the bed. We would all fall asleep together. Otis sitting on my chest and Hemi tucked into my arm. Caddis, the long haired Tabby liked him too, but only when we weren't looking. Then came the newest addition on February 23. A five week old yellow Lab named Dozer. It was very funny to see a dog smaller than all the cats, follow them everywhere. Of course he became much larger in a very short time but learned to be respectful and gentle with all the cats, especially Otis. I don't think Otis ever lived with a dog before he came to us. Otis and Dozer would snooze on the bed. When Otis got sick all the animals knew. Hemi would lick him to clean his fur. Caddis would give more space and privacy and Dozer would check for him under the bed. Otis slipped away quietly in my arms. As I kissed his furry head for the last time, I promised him I would look for him when it was my turn to come across the bridge. I also let him know that Haiku(cat) and Bailey(dog), two gentle souls who left this world a while ago, would be waiting for him. I miss looking into your greenest of green eyes, the soft touch of your whiskers on my face and your deep purring as we fall asleep.
