Memories of Oreo
| My now nine-year-old daughter, Emily, was "en route" when her daddy came home twenty dollars poorer carrying a little lab mix we later named "Oreo." Following a challenging beginning, as I was very pregnant and she loved ankles, we bonded as she curled up in my nightgown listening to "the alien" in my tummy and jumped on everyone but me. That was not to last as she almost knocked me down the day we brought "the alien" home from the hospital and proceeded to tear out the screen on our back porch to make known her feelings and concerns. Would our "children" ever become friends?!? Well, in the words of Emily as Oreo (a victim of a very aggressive form of cancer) was recently laid to rest, "I always felt as though Oreo was my body guard." Their mommy learned early on raising my voice with Emily was not to be tolerated and spanking was out of the question! I learned early on allowing Emily to cry for more than two seconds was not acceptable as Oreo would whimper loudly until she was consoled, a behavior which was exhibited any time any baby cried, even on t.v. I learned early on my "white child" would always be safe as long as Oreo was within ear-shot. I learned early on all the rules about not letting pets sleep in your bed, etc., were made by people who had never had an "Oreo" in their lives. I learned early on a pet you take in to become a part of your family can rather quickly melt hearts, tick off guests that are not animal lovers, make you feel quite loved, devour furniture and shoes and screen porches, and change lives. In saying "Good-Bye" to the pet that has changed her life, my daughter told Oreo to send her a letter. I have complete confidence that our faithful companion will do just that. . .and I wonder what she will say. I hope no well-meaning angel has called her "the 'D' word" and that she will assure us a part of us has gone with her as she will remain forever with us. |
