Memories of Pips
|
19th June 2009 Your Daddy found you as a very young kitten on a farm. You were only three weeks old but had been living outside and pretty much fending for yourself. You were crawling with fleas and had a bad dose of earmites. Your Daddy came home to me and told me he'd seen a gorgeous little kitten. Three weeks later, you arrived home with us. You settled in straight away- I remember we'd gone out and got you a nice bowl and some special kitten food, but you kept trying to steal your big sister, Cleo's food instead, much to her annoyance. You tried to make friends with her but she was a bit grumpy. You were so mischevious- we tried to keep you indoors until you'd been spayed, but you just kept sneaking out whenever Cleo did- you were so adventurous- in the end we admitted defeat and just let you out in the garden... under supervision of course! I remember one time when you managed to climb into the fireplace and got yourself covered in coal. The whole side of your tummy was black for days! You were constantly running across that busy road at the old house, and I was so worried something would happen to you- but you were a free little cat, and loved going off to explore. You seemed to go off and play with all the other neighbourhood cats- you were just that kind of cat. You also loved your toys, espcially your little pink mouse. We would make mouse noises and you would come running and play for hours with it- we we'd often to have to hide it at night so you wouldn't jump around the bed with it. At night, you used to sleep on my side of the bed and would often snuggle up close, occasionally coming up to lick my nose in the middle of the night. But you were a soft little thing, and so cute, I didn't mind! When I found out I was pregnant in Feb 2008, I was worried how you and Cleo would adapt to a baby because you were both my babies, and I didn't want you to feel left out. Throughout my pregnancy though, you were always at my side. In the early stages, when all I did was puke, you'd come and sit in the bathroom with me. You came and sat on my tummy a few times before I got too big- it was like you knew, and you wanted to look after me. Later on, when I was up throughout the night going to the toilet, you'd wake up with me, sit outside the toilet with me, then come back to bed and snuggle up with me. You did that every night- it was so sweet. In November, Oliver was born, and we moved, so I was worried how you would adapt. We searched high and low for a nice house with a good garden, not just for Oliver, but for you and Cleo. We found a cute little house in a much quieter location, and although it was near a road, it seemed much safer than the old house. It took a while for you to get used to the move and the baby, but you took it in your stride and was soon out exploring again. It was hard because you'd been my little lap cat but I couldn't have you sitting on my knee whilst feeding Oliver- eventually as he was a bit bigger, you'd climb up and mould yourself round him so you could- I didn't have the heart to take you off, and besides, I loved having you around. The move meant that you and Cleo bonded as well- Cleo, although a bit older, always seemed a bit more scared and she seemed to take your lead when exploring- you'd often both play in the garden till all hours. We got a cat flap fitted but you hated it, and refused to use it- I think you were too soft to push it and we ended up taking pity and leaving the kitchen window open for you. You made friends with the neighbourhood cats- you were such a sociable little thing. Somehow amidst the move, we lost your little mouse- I searched everywhere for it but just couldn't find it everywhere- you didn't really take to the new ones we bought you. You seemed to like the new house, and even seemed to like Oliver although, you'd sneak past him as he started learning to grab you! You loved his moses basket- when we weren't using it, we made the mistake of putting it on top of the wardrobe- I remember looking for you one day and I heard this little rusting sound, and there you were snuggled up in it. It eventually became your bed- again, we didn't have the heart to turf you out of it- you looked too cute in it. A strange thing happened months after moving... you came totting in with your little pink mouse all of a sudden. Your Daddy and I laughed so much and were so glad you'd found it. We hadn't seen it for seven months so who knows where it was, but you seemed so pleased with yourself when you found it! Much fun was to be had for the next few weeks! When we finally put Oliver in his nursery by himself, people kept telling us not to let you and Cleo in there just in case you got into his bed. I allowed you in there when I was but on a couple of occasions, you sneaked in there and I found you curled up at the bottom of his bed whilst he was asleep. Although, I got you out, I wish I hadn't- you would've been fine- I know you were just making sure Oliver was safe. I was going away for a few days in June 2009. In the days before, I was busy in the kitchen making some baby purees for Oliver. I made a chicken stock with a whole chicken. When I took the chicken out of the pan, you went crazy! I was trying to cut it up so I could put some out for you and Cleo, but you kept trying to jump up on the kitchen worktop for it. You somehow managed to steal some whilst I had my back turned and the next thing you started choking. Luckily, your Daddy managed to hold you down and pull the chicken bone from your throat, you little monkey!! The night before I went away, I was busy packing, but as always, you snuggled up with me on the bed all night. The next morning, you came and licked my nose and purred round me. I was in a rush but remember giving you a little cuddle. After that, I was hectic. It was a rainy morning and as Daddy was giving Oliver and I a lift to the station, we were trying to get his van packed up quickly. In the rush, I left without saying bye to you and Cleo. I never ever did that usually- if I was going away, even for a night, I always gave you both a kiss and cuddle and told you I loved you. Little did I know that I'd never see you again and that last cuddle on the bed that rainy Wednesday morning would be our last. I spoke to Daddy and asked him how you and Cleo were the next day- I asked him to look after you and to give you a cuddle from me. On the Friday, Daddy rang to tell me the news. It as a lovely summers night- Daddy had been outside and you'd been chasing flies. You disappeared off somewhere. The next minute, a man popped his head over the fence and asked if we had a little ginger cat. You'd been hit by a car. Daddy ran to get you, but you'd gone instantly. You were only two. Daddy buried you in the garden before I got back, but just as he was doing so, Cleo came over and sat by his side, and dropped a dead mouse by your little body then walked off. She was giving you a little gift- Daddy buried the mouse with you. It's only been a week, and I'm still so upset. I can't believe you're gone- you were like my little kindred kitten. I'll never get over losing you my little Pipsqueak. Cleo misses you- don't worry- we'll take care of her. Oliver's a bit too young, but I'll make sure he knows all about what a special little cat you were when he's older, my dear Pips. Mummy's going to go now, but I'll visit you every day, and I'll see you one day. Your Aunty Flora and Uncle Ginger will hopefully be looking after you. RIP and sweet dreams my little one. Love you. 06/07 to 12/06/09. 20th June 2009
