Pooch's Rainbow Residency

Memories of Pooch

I remember the first day you came into my life. It was mid-February 1993, and you were the last pup left in the litter. My friend, Charlie, brought you over to my college apartment in his Jeep. We remember you tried to jump out of his Jeep going down the road. You were so nervous that day and didn't understand what was going on. Once you got to me you were fine with me, but any time there was a noise, someone knocked on the door, or there was a thunderstorm you ran and literally slid under the bed. We laughed at you so much we called you Chicken Dog. We called you Chicken Dog for six months, but you never responded to Chicken Dog; in fact, you didn't respond to any name but Pooch. It was the only name you liked. You didn't care for dry dog food, loved people food...guess you weren't stupid. You got so fat, we called you Football. I don't think you liked that either. One thing you liked for sure was the beach. Even though you hated a bath, you loved to run in the ocean and catch the tennis ball in the waves. You never missed an opportunity to do that, and, I think there is no other place you loved more than Galveston, Texas. You never really cried or whined over anything, but all we had to do was say beach and you went crazy. Even though you were a very cautious dog, you were very friendly and loved on everybody. You loved to have your ears rubbed. I used to tell you, you have such pretty ears when I would scratch and pet your ears; and, you made the funniest faces and loved it. You would just lay there very content and then get up and come rub your face on my leg and scratch your back under my legs for no reason at all other than to say, "Hey, I'm here, check me out, I love you, give me some lovin, some food, and let me outside." You liked different beds and would circle them and fluff them up to your liking and you used to sleep under the covers all the way at the bottom by my feet. Then you got too old and couldn't breathe under there, so you slept on top of the sheets at the foot of my bed. When you got old you would sleep on the floor on your bed next to me everynight until you got so old you would sleep in your bed in front of the fireplace. You were too tired to get up, and who could blame you. You were a dog that knew who he was and what he liked in this world; and, if you weren't sure of it, you didn't want anything to do with it. I think the covers and under the bed were your safe places you liked to go to sort things out in your mind and be at peace. You lived a very long good life, loved by many, and well taken care of by everyone. You lived to see your 18th birthday, you lost a lot of weight really fast and it was hard to let you go... very hard. As much pain that you were in, you never cried or let on for a minute that you were hurting or sad. Dr. Bond said that you were always a stoic dog, that it was just your nature, and one of his favorite patients. You weren't a complainer, and that's what I liked best about you. I would have never guessed that you had stomach cancer because you held your head high everywhere you went. Keifer and Grant miss you alot already. They are so depressed. I hope you're having fun with Daisy, BeBe, and Sam. I am lucky to have had you as my best friend, I will never forget you, I will love you forever, until we meet again, my very good friend...
