Sambuca's Rainbow Residency

Memories of Sambuca

You were my first. You were the dream of my childhood come true. You have been one of the best parts of my life. You had a sparkle in your eyes and a smile on your face. I found you in Vermont. I brought your Goddogmother Mary Rose with me. I picked you instead of your brothers because you came to me. I got to name you and I wanted an Italian name, so you were called an Italian pitch black liquor. You cried as I lay beside your crate when I brought you home to my condo. I cried as I lay beside your crate the night before I had to let you go. I bought a house for you with a big backyard. You walked the perimeter of that backyard and then rolled in the grass and kicked your legs skyward. You even loved the backyard in winter with the snow. You let the snow cake on your face. You hated to come in from the backyard until your last year when it was hard to see the backyard and needed encouragement for the three steps. You let Toby be the alpha dog when I brought him home. He was quite the bully stealing your food and shoving you out of his way. But you retaliated when you assumed possession of his crate. The funniest thing was the two of you crammed in one crate. You lay under each Christmas tree amidst the presents while Toby slowly and trancelike, circled the tree. I called it his Christmas tree dance. You stayed with me for a year after I had to let Toby go, even though it was hard for you to manage your activities of daily living. You had gone from a lively puppy who climbed onto the coffee table to a sleepy, very graying old gal who lay beneath the coffee table. If I could have willed you to lie there forever at my feet, it would be so. I know you grieved for Toby after he left because you never barked again. Now I weep for both my furry children. You were my family. You gave me an incredible and unbelievable 16 years of devotion and companionship. Your crate stands empty and I am alone.

I made the decision today to open up my heart and home to another dog, but I still cry when I think of you and I will always cherish you. I know that as an angel dog you lie on my bed at night and though I can't touch you with my hands I feel you. His name is Randy and he is bigger than you. He is a lab, golden, chow mix and was a lost dog. He is being trained by an inmate in a Florida prison and he will come home April 4. He gives his paw a lot and is low energy so I think we will be ok together. I will have to buy all new dog things. Please watch over us and let us be happy. I love you! Until we meet again.

It has been a while since I visited and because it was the anniversary of your and Toby's passing, I thought I should let you know how things are going with Randy. He is so different than you two. Would you believe I am walking him 1-2 times a day? He rather insists on it! Squirrels have become the bane of our existence. Randy sleeps in my bed like you two did when you were younger. That bed is jammed with me, him and you, my angel dogs. He is big and takes up a lot of space. He does not do crates, so the new one is dismantled. He loves rubs and truth be told is much more open to being touched. Yes, Toby, he lets me touch his feet! Randy would have me give him belly rubs 24/7. He learned commands in his prison program so is way more obedient than you two were. He especially likes to sit and give paw for food. The biscuits have gotten way bigger. You will always be my only cocker spaniels! Thank you for letting us be happy again!

Please also visit Toby.
